Vancouver Fraser Port Authority | Log dump habitat restoration

October 17, 2023

Project status
Permit application under review

In August 2023, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority submitted a project permit application to undertake habitat restoration of an old log dump facility. The proposed project is located in the northern extent of Indian Arm, British Columbia in federal waters managed by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

As part of the Project and Environmental Review for the proposed project under the Impact Assessment Act, the proposed project was posted on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry with an opportunity for public comment between October 17 and November 16, 2023. The port authority will conduct formal consultation activities with stakeholders and Indigenous groups.

About the project

Habitat restoration of an old log dump facility would involve the removal, by a clamshell dredge, of sediment containing anthropogenic materials, such as, logs, cables, rope and wood waste from an area of approximately 4,000 square metres. This is to restore the seabed to a more natural state, to promote an increase in habitat value and biodiversity. Dredged material would be disposed of at an approved disposal at sea site and a suitable upland location.

Habitat restoration works at the log dump facility are proposed to supplement the habitat offsetting plan under PER 20-191 – Sterling Shipyard Remediation and Infill, which is required as part of a Fisheries and Oceans Canada Fisheries Act Authorization.

Note: Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has reviewed this project as well as the Sterling Shipyard Remediation and Infill as a single project. Information about DFO’s review is available on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry.
