Vessel slow-down and adopt near-time arrivals to support port fluidity

We are writing to inform you of the current port congestion caused by the ILWU strike action and to request your urgent cooperation in adopting near-time arrival for your vessels calling the Port of Vancouver.

The strike action has disrupted the port operations and anchorage capacity. To keep operations as fluid as possible, we have changed the anchorage assignment protocols to prioritize the terminals that are still operational. However, this is not enough to prevent further congestion and delays, we ask you to slow down your vessels and adopt a near-time arrival process.

These benefits of near-time arrivals are clear, it will assist the port community to:

  • Reduce the demand on anchorages
  • Reduce port congestion and delays
  • Minimize environmental and community impacts
  • Support port recovery and resilience after the disruption

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this situation, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation. We hope the strike action will end soon and we can resume normal operations.

In case of any questions or clarifications, please reach out to our 24/7 Operations Centre at 604-665-9086 or [email protected]

Thank you for your continued support to the Port of Vancouver.
