Permit issued

In January 2021, a project permit was issued to JJM Construction (the Applicant) to conduct maintenance dredging of up to approximately 2,500 cubic metres of material adjacent to 12301 Musqueam Drive, Surrey, BC, on waters managed by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The project was approved subject to 32 permit conditions that JJM Construction must meet to ensure the project does not result in significant adverse environmental effects.

About the project

JJM Construction, on behalf of Schnitzer Steel Canada Ltd., proposes to conduct maintenance dredging of up to approximately 2,500 cubic metres of material adjacent to 12301 Musqueam Drive, Surrey, BC. The applicant is seeking a multi-year permit to dredge periodically. Previous maintenance dredging within the same footprint and to the same depth was most recently conducted in September 2017.

The Project consists of dredging to an approximate grade of -6 metres local low water using a barge-mounted crane and clamshell bucket. The dredge area will be approximately 70 metres by 10 metres. Dredged materials will be loaded onto a barge for transport and disposal at an approved disposal at sea site. Dredging is anticipated to take two days to complete and will be conducted on a Saturday and Sunday day shift to avoid interrupting operations at the facility.
