Fraser Grain Terminal | Former Bekaert Site Demolition Project
Project status
Permit issued
On June 14, 2017 a project permit was issued to Fraser Grain Terminal Ltd. for the demolition of two buildings located at 11041 Elevator Road in Surrey, British Columbia on federal lands managed by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
The project was approved subject to 28 conditions which Fraser Grain Terminal Ltd. must meet to ensure the project does not result in significant adverse environmental effects.
Construction is anticipated to begin in the Fall 2017 and be completed by Winter 2018 . For more information about the project and construction activities, please go to Fraser Grain Terminal’s website.
About the project
The proposed project involves the demolition of two buildings formerly used by Bekaert: one for production (21,000m²) and for storage (approximately 800m²). Demolition of these vacant buildings is linked to the proposals currently being developed by FGT Ltd for a new grain terminal at the site. The grain terminal project will form part of a separate permit application that is due to be submitted to VFPA later in 2017.
Demolition entails the dismantling and removal of the buildings, including appropriate on-site management of construction demolition materials and appropriate handling and disposal of hazardous wastes. No excavation is expected during demolition. The proposed demolition project will be approximately three months in duration and generally entails dismantling and removal of building materials and leveling of the existing slab foundation. No ground disturbance will be required. Upon completion of the demolition works, the concrete raft building foundation will be left completely bare (i.e. free of equipment, installation anchors, piping, and electrical cabling stubs, any protruding structural steel, interior walls, etc.).
