World Maritime Day: Canada is a maritime trading nation

On September 29, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the marine shipping community celebrate World Maritime Day. This year’s theme is “Shipping: Indispensable to the World”, a theme that is particularly relevant for Canada.

“Arguably, when something is considered “indispensable,” something we can’t do without, then we should be doing everything possible to protect it, to maintain it and to sustain it,” writes Dr. Richard Wiefelspuett, executive director of the Vancouver-based Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping.

Wiefelspuett adds that, while the trade numbers and facts and figures speak for themselves, equally indispensable is the safe and sustainable environment in which marine shipping must operate. Read more.
