Staying safe on the water during Vancouver’s busiest weekend

B.C. Day long weekend is typically one of Vancouver’s busiest weekends, which means local waterways will be packed with recreational boaters.

“It will be everyone’s responsibility to ensure boater and water safety this weekend,” writes Pat Quealey, CEO of British Columbia’s Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue.

The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCM-SAR) is a key part of the marine rescue system on Canada’s West Coast, responding to more than 700 marine emergencies each year and raising public awareness about safe boating.

RCM-SAR also works closely with other agencies to promote safety in the Burrard Inlet and Vancouver Harbour. For example, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, along with the Canadian Coast Guard, co-chair the Marine Emergency Response Coordination Committee, which co-ordinates emergency response activities among more than 30 relevant organizations, including RCM-SAR. The port authority, in particular, helps keep our local waterways safe by overseeing all vessel activity in the harbour and instituting practices and procedures to prevent unsafe boater activity.
