Silence is golden
DNV-GL Cruise Update Magazine 2017
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s EcoAction program was recently featured in Cruise Update Magazine, a publication by DNV-GL. In January 2017, the program was updated to recognize vessels that are doing their part to reduce underwater noise, which can interfere with the ability of marine mammals to navigate, communicate and hunt.
DNV-GL provides classification services to the maritime industry, and the company’s SILENT-E class notation qualify for the highest harbor dues discount for vessels calling at the Port of Vancouver.
“The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has been among the pioneers investigating the impact of shipping noise on at-risk marine mammals,” write Morten Smedsrud and Yanran Wang, engineers with DNV-GL’s maritime advisory practice. “[The EcoAction program] makes Canada the first country in the world with a marine noise reduction incentive.” Read the article [PDF]
