Opinion: Sustainable oceans key to British Columbia’s prosperity
The Vancouver Sun, June 7, 2018
In light of World Oceans Day, Robert Lewis-Manning, president of the Chamber of Shipping of B.C., discusses the importance of understanding, acknowledging, and addressing concerns about the impact of the shipping industry on the maritime environment. He points to the efforts by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to lessen emissions and reduce the impacts of shipping through its Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation (ECHO) and EcoAction Programs. He also discusses the port authority as the first port in North America to prohibit in-port ballast water exchange without prior mid-ocean exchange — a practice that has since become the basis of federal regulations. Lewis-Manning emphasizes how with existing sustainability initiatives, we need to continue fostering collaboration among key groups, including local communities, First Nations, as well as industry and government, to align on an approach that will both protect our oceans and prosperity for generations for come.
