Massey Tunnel replacement — Learn from the past and look to the future

The plan to replace the existing George Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge has been a topic of discussion recently.

According to Keith Sashaw, president and CEO of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – British Columbia, the project enjoys the support of the Metro Vancouver business community because it will benefit the economy: it will inject $3.5 billion into local businesses, generate employment, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and help this province remain competitive in a global market.

“With the largest container port in Canada located south of the Fraser River, this crossing is, and will continue to be, an integral part of Canada’s west coast trade gateway,” writes Sashaw. “Projections indicate that if trade and economic development south of the Fraser continues to grow, total commercial traffic across this section of Highway 99 could double by 2045.” Read more.
