Cruise ships plug into clean power

Using technology and innovation is critical in a changing energy landscape. One local example of innovation is shore power technology, which enables cruise ships to turn off their diesel engines and connect to shore-based, clean BC Hydro electricity. Shore power allows cruise lines to run all their onboard services with local electric power during their day-long calls in the Port of Vancouver.

“It’s obvious to anybody casting their gaze towards Vancouver harbour and Canada Place at this time of year that cruise ship season is in full effect,” writes Jessica McDonald, president and CEO of BC Hydro. “With more than 230 cruise ship calls annually, it just makes good environmental and business sense to use shore power.” Read more.
