Opinion: Local fisheries key to orcas’ survival
Vancouver Sun, November 21
In light of World Fisheries day, Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard of Ocean Wise highlights the importance of sustainable fisheries for the long-term conservation of our oceans and marine wildlife. In recent years the mortality rate of local southern resident killer whales has risen as the whales feed almost exclusively on Chinook salmon stocks which have been on decline. Barrett-Lenard highlights efforts led by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s ECHO Program as well as steps taken by the Federal government to address the mortality rate and current situation of the southern resident killer whale population. He concludes by stating Industry and government should be applauded for their efforts thus far while strongly encouraging them to continue their efforts to preserve these local treasures.
