South Shore Trade Area

South Shore Trade Area MapThe South Shore Trade Area is bordered on the north side by the waters of Burrard Inlet and on the south by residential and commercial neighborhoods in the City of Vancouver. These lands feature several terminals, the Canadian Pacific Railway corridor that connects to the rest of Canada, and access roads for trucks. The area is a major employment generator for the greater Vancouver region.

The March 2009 South Shore Trade Area Study, one of a series of studies completed under the Asia‐Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, identified the transportation infrastructure needs to ensure continued and competitive operations.

Two projects were identified:

  • Powell Street Grade Separation (delivered by the City of Vancouver)
  • Stewart Street Elevated Structure and Victoria Driver Pedestrian Overpass (delivered by the Port of Vancouver)

Project highlights

  • $127 million capital investment
  • $58 million industry contribution, pre-funded by the Port of Vancouver

Project benefits

  • accommodation of anticipated growth in rail and road traffic
  • additional rail lines and enabling more fluid operation
  • improved port truck movements and traffic flows
  • improved access to terminal facilities for commercial traffic
