The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is undertaking a road work project to widen and realign Commissioner Street to the north between Nanaimo Street and Slocan Street in order to make room for Canadian Pacific (CP) to add additional rail track. This project is being done to help support the capacity needed on the south shore to move goods, and it received funding in 2018 from the Government of Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund.
- Removal of the old Columbia Containers grain elevator
- Changes to Commissioner Street near Columbia Containers, includes shifting the road north, paving and adding a new lane
- Construction of a retaining wall
- Future installation of an additional rail track next to current tracks, from four tracks to six tracks (led by CP)
These improvements will:
- Improve port truck movements and traffic flows
- Improve access to terminal facilities for commercial traffic
- Enable safe and efficient access to port lands for employees and service providers
- Provide land for rail track expansion, supporting trade growth and increased local and national job

The first work that will happen on this project is that the port authority will demolish the old Columbia Containers grain elevator to make room for road work anticipated to take place on Commissioner Street. Prior to demolition, the port authority will ensure that any hazardous materials used in the original building are identified and safely removed to be disposed of at a licensed facility.
Timing of demolition:
- November 2019 to March 2020
- Weekdays and weekends (no work will occur on statutory holidays)
- 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
What to expect
During demolition, an excavator and/or a crane will be used to demolish the grain elevator and load materials into dump trucks to be disposed of at a licensed facility. Water may be used to control dust from demolition activity. Nearby residents and businesses can anticipate noise associated with construction activities, such as concrete crushing, banging, and scraping associated with demolition and loading materials into trucks.

- Q3 2023 – Completion of Cascadia support track project
