Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project

May 21, 2015

Project status

The Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project is focused on delivering five key elements, several of which are funded by the federal and provincial government. One project, the GCT Deltaport intermodal yard reconfiguration, was privately funded by GCT Canada LP. The five elements are:

  • An overpass on the existing Roberts Bank causeway that will separate road and rail traffic – completed in fall 2014
  • Vehicle Access Control System (“VACS”) – completed in summer 2016
  • Intermodal yard reconfiguration of rail track and container handling equipment within the existing GCT Deltaport terminal – commenced semi-automatic operations in 2018
  • Addition of rail track within the existing railway corridor and a portion of the Option Lands – construction on rail corridor portion continues
  • The truck staging facility on Deltaport Way, adjacent to Highway 17A, is the fifth element – under construction and is expected to be complete in the summer of 2020

About the project

The Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project is an efficient and cost-effective plan to increase container capacity through improvements to existing port infrastructure. Project improvements will be implemented mostly within the existing terminal, road and rail footprint and will have a low potential for environmental impact. Work will not occur within the marine environment.

GCT Deltaport, at Roberts Bank in Delta, British Columbia, is the largest container terminal in Canada, with a capacity of 1.8 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit containers). Current road and rail constraints limited the capacity of GCT Deltaport to meet forecasted demand for additional container traffic.

As part of the Container Capacity Improvement Program, we have worked with the Province of British Columbia and the operator of GCT Deltaport operator Global Container Terminals (GCT) Canada, to fund and reconfigure the existing intermodal yard that increases the facility’s overall container capacity to a total of 2.4 million TEUs.
