Vanterm, located in Burrard Inlet, is a 76-acre, twin-berth container terminal that offers five high-speed dock gantries, a modern fleet of container handling equipment and a five-track on-dock intermodal rail yard. Terminal expansion plans will increase Vanterm's container capacity by the end of 2004 and continue to ensure reliable and timely transportation handling. Vanterm is ISPS compliant.

TSI Terminal Systems Inc. operates Vanterm under a long term lease agreement with the Vancouver Port Authority. TSI is a marine terminal services company dedicated to providing world-class service through the strategic development and integration of leading-edge technology, progressive management and commitment to excellence.

Commodities Handled: Containerized cargo, project cargo, and bulk oils.

Total Area: 31 hectares (76 acres)

Berths: Two container berths: 619 metres long (2,030 ft.); 1 combined berth, 228 metres long (749 ft.)

Water Depths: 15.2 – 15.5 metres deep (50-51 ft.)

Rail Services: On-dock Intermodal Yard consisting of 5 tracks totaling 2,200 metres. Serviced by two intercontinental railways: CN and CPR.

Truck Gate: 9 in-bound and 3-lane exit gate for efficient turnaround times. Closed circuit TV cameras via Internet to monitor truck lane traffic. Extended hours and a truck reservation priority system for efficient use of truck lanes. 2 reefer lanes. 6 checker stations. 2 truck scales.

Equipment:
  • 5 cranes: 4 Post-Panamax at 16 wide and 1 Super Post-Panamax at 18 wide.
  • 12 RTGs capable of 1 container over 4x7 wide.
  • 9 top picks (full container handlers).
  • 9 side picks (empty container handlers).
  • 34 yard tractors, 42 yard chassis, extensive mobile equipment.
  • 280 reefer points at 440V.
  • An underground pipeline from West Coast Reduction Terminal for loading bulk oils to deep tanks.
Container Yard: 7,000 full TEUs at 3-high. 3 -high grounded operation loads. 5-high grounded operation empties.

New for 2005:
  • Effective April 2005, Vanterm will have 6 dockside cranes with the removal of an older crane and the addition of two new Super Post-Panamax cranes capable of 20-wide containers and twin-twenty, 65-tonne lift.
  • Additional 3-track intermodal yard on the west side of the terminal.
  • Additional yard support equipment including RTG's and tractor-trailer units.
General Cargo Particulars: Berth Aprons: 100,000 lb. axle load; 700 lbs./sq. ft. uniform load. Yard Area: 100,000 lb. axle load; 2,000 lbs./sq. ft. uniform load.

Information Services: Advanced computer systems include full EDI capability, yard and ship planning, and fully integrated container monitoring systems.
