Centerm is a container and breakbulk cargo facility that handles cargo for some of the world's largest shipping lines. Centerm's staff and longshore labour force offer years of experience moving containers, pulp, steel products and project cargo. The terminal's fully-integrated on-dock intermodal service ensures that cargo moves quickly and efficiently between ship, rail and truck. Centerm is ISPS compliant. Centerm is operated by P&O Ports Canada Inc. under a long-term lease agreement with the Vancouver Port Authority. Terminal expansion plans will double Centerm's container handling capacity to 720,000 TEUs by early 2006.

Commodities Handled: Containerized cargo, forest products, breakbulk and project cargoes.

Total Area: 28 hectare site (73 acres)

Berths: Two container and four general cargo berths: 12.2 to 15.5 metres deep (40 ft. to 51 ft.); Container: 650 metres long (2,133 ft.); Breakbulk Cargo: 180-400 metres (590 ft. to 1,312 ft.).

Warehouses: Two dry sheds 24,439 sq. metres (220,000 sq. ft.). Open storage of 204,380 sq. metres (2.2 million sq. ft.).

Rail Services: On-dock Intermodal Yard consisting of 3 tracks totaling 840 metres. Total on-dock rail: 3,112 metres. Serviced by two intercontinental railways: CN and CPR.

Truck Access : On-dock truck transfer facilities. 12 incoming truck lanes. Closed circuit TV cameras via internet to monitor truck lane traffic. Extended hours and an appointment system for efficient use of truck lanes. Real-time RF data collection for efficient dispatch. LA King Automated Gate Process.

Equipment: 4 dock-side gantry cranes:
  • One crane at 50.2 metre outreach; 45 tonne capacity; Post-Panamax
  • Two cranes at 42.7 metre outreach: 45 tonne capacity; Post-Panamax.
  • One crane at 37.0 metre outreach; 40 tonne capacity.
  • Total on-dock refrigeration plugs: 294 units. Lifting equipment: top picks, side handlers with 20 ft. and 40 ft. expandable heads and built-in scales. Lift capacities range from 13 tonnes to 43 tonnes.
  • Fork-lift trucks are also available, with various attachments and capacities.
  • Railcar pushers, tractors and trailers, platform scale.
  • Advanced NAVIS LLC computerized yard and vessel planning, gate systems and cargo control. PC Lan client/server network; LXE mobile data terminals. Web access.
Container Yard: 12,000 TEU storage capacity. 4-high grounded operations loads. 5-high grounded operation empties.

New for 2005:
  • Two new 62-tonne Post-Panamax gantry cranes (22 wide)
  • 16 rubber tire yard handling cranes
  • Crane 3 and 4 upgraded
  • Berth extension and dredging to 15.5 m deep
  • Rail intermodal yard expansion to 8,000 feet
  • Reefer yard expansion to 600 plugs
  • New site services building
General Cargo Particulars: Berth Aprons: 200,000 lb. axle load; 750 lbs./sq. ft. uniform load. Yard Area: 200,000 lb. axle load; 2,000 lbs/sq. ft. uniform load.
