Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is part of the Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness portfolio, which includes emergency preparedness, crisis management, national security, corrections, policing, oversight, and crime prevention, as well as border services. The CBSA brings together all the major players involved in facilitating legitimate cross-border traffic and supporting economic development while stopping people and goods that pose a potential risk to Canada. It integrates several key functions previously spread among three organizations: the Customs program from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, the Intelligence, Interdiction and Enforcement program from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and the Import Inspection at Ports of Entry program from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Canada - U.S. customs border cooperation: U.S. customs inspectors are stationed at the Port of Vancouver to pre-screen containerized cargo. The Port of Vancouver was one of the first ports to participate as a member of the U.S. Customs Container Security Initiative (CSI). Partners in Protection (PIP) is a collaborative effort between the CBSA and private industry that encourages information sharing with the goal of preventing and reducing terrorist and criminal activity. This program is available to the entire trade community, including importers, exporters, carriers, brokers, warehouse operators and associations. The VPA was one of the first PIP program members. The CBSA is working closely with PIP's American counterpart, the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), to share information and resources, and to enhance border security. |
