Container Terminal Expansion

Roberts Bank
While the Vancouver Port Authority's first priority is to work with its terminal operators to increase the capacities of existing facilities through operating efficiencies and new equipment productivity, improvements alone will not be sufficient to meet the capacity requirements of approximately 5 million TEUs* by 2020 across the Port of Vancouver. As a result, the VPA is looking at expansion options including those at Roberts Bank.

* A TEU, or Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, is a standard unit for measuring container volumes based on a container 20 feet in length.

Roberts Bank Container Expansion Program
The Roberts Bank Container Expansion Program is a Vancouver Port Authority proposal to expand container handling facilities at Roberts Bank in Delta from 900,000 TEUs to an anticipated capacity of 3.2 million TEUs. The Program will initially add a third-berth to the existing two-berth Deltaport container terminal, followed by the development of a new three-berth container terminal known as Terminal 2.

The expansion will enhance the competitiveness of British Columbia and Canada by providing significant socio-economic benefits to workers, businesses and local communities.

The growth of container traffic on the west coast of North America is due to the rapid expansion of Asia-Pacific trade, as well as the growth in containerization of a larger range of products.

Roberts Bank is located 40 kilometres south of Vancouver's inner harbour in Delta, B.C. Click on the PDF document below to view an aerial image of Roberts Bank:
