Development and Projects

Burrard Inlet

On February 19, 2003, the VPA announced the first phase in its overall container terminal expansion strategy to increase capacity at the Port of Vancouver to capture the significant increase in container volumes predicted over the next 20 years. This first phase included the Centerm Redevelopment and Vanterm Container Terminal Upgrade projects. The completion of these two projects to the Port of Vancouver's existing Burrard Inlet container terminals, increases total container capacity to over 2 million TEUs.

Centerm Redevelopment
P&O Ports Canada Inc. operates Centerm container terminal under a long-term lease agreement with the Vancouver Port Authority. Centerm has recently completed terminal redevelopment plans which have more than doubled Centerm's container handling capacity from 360,000 TEUs to approximately 780,000 TEUs.

Terminal upgrades included:
  • Conversion of "top-pick" operation (using mobile equipment) to an RTG (rubber tire gantry crane) operation. Most modern container terminals around the world operate RTG's, including the Port of Vancouver's Vanterm terminal located in Burrard Inlet, and Deltaport, located in Delta
  • Upgrade to berths and installaltion of two new modern container cranes to accommodate the largest container vessels in use
  • Installation of a new transformer building and substation, and Radio Frequency Antenna (RF) system to service the upgraded terminal.
  • Modification and extention to intermodal yard tracks to increase on-dock rail capacity
  • Replacement of old maintenance building with a new Site Services Facility to perform existing maintenance functions and handle the maintenance of the new RTG's

Vanterm Container Terminal Upgrade
TSI Terminal Systems Inc. operates Vanterm under a long-term lease agreement with the Vancouver Port Authority. Terminal expansion plans are now complete and have increased Vanterm's container capacity to approximately 600,000 TEUs. Terminal upgrades included:
  • Removal of an older crane and the addition of two new Super Post-Panamax cranes for a total of six dockside gantry cranes
  • Additional three-track intermodal yard on the west side of terminal
  • Additional yard support equipment including RTG's and tractor-trailer units
  • Addition of 350 refrigerated container plugs
  • Relocation of buildings
  • Modification to exit gate to accommodate 2-4 exit lanes
  • New technology to increase terminal efficiencies
