Vancouver, B.C. The Vancouver Port Authority (VPA) has awarded the construction contract for the marine works portion of the Deltaport Third Berth expansion to Deltaport Constructors Ltd., a project-specific joint venture between Vancouver Pile Driving Ltd. and Graham Construction and Engineering Ltd. Graham Construction is a Delta-based company. The $195 million contract encompasses the dredge, fill and berth work associated with the expansion. Deltaport's terminal operator, TSI Terminal Systems Inc., will tender the terminal infrastructure portion separately.

Expansion of Deltaport is a key component of the Pacific Gateway Strategy. "When construction begins in January it will represent a major step toward our vision of capturing an increasing share of Asia-Pacific container trade," said Captain Gordon Houston, President and CEO of the Vancouver Port Authority.

The Deltaport expansion received the go-ahead from the federal Minister of Environment in early November and has now received authorization from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. In addition to the marine works contract, the port will also invest between $20 and $30 million in environmental mitigation initiatives.

"We are grateful to government for their approval of this project and look forward to working with the community to see this project is built in as sustainable a manner as possible," said Houston.

TSI Terminal Systems Inc. (TSI), whose recent acquisition by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (OTPP) has been approved by VPA, operates Deltaport. "We are excited to finally be moving forward with this expansion," said Norman Stark, President and CEO of TSI. "We are confident in the growth of container trade through this gateway and know that this project represents an excellent long-term investment, both for OTPP as well as our local and national economy."

The Port of Vancouver, Canada's flagship port, trades more than $43 billion in goods with more than 90 trading economies annually. Port activities generate 69,200 jobs with $4 billion in Gross Domestic Product and $8.9 billion in economic output.
