October 18, 2005 Vancouver Port Authority Named One of Canada's Top 100 Employers
Vancouver, B.C. The Vancouver Port Authority (VPA) was named as one of Canadas Top 100 Employers in yesterday's issue of Maclean's magazine.
Over 7,500 businesses from across the country were invited to compete and 1,200 companies contended for the coveted 100 spots. This distinction highlights VPAs role as a leader in our field and in our nation. We are honoured to be in the company of Canadas other top employers and are pleased to be recognized as one of the best places in Canada to work, said the VPAs President and Chief Executive Officer, Captain Gordon Houston. Selection was based on community and charitable involvement as well as seven key criteria including: physical workplace; work and social atmosphere; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; and training and skills development. In the last few years the VPA has been working hard to create an even more exceptional place to work for our employees, to build a more sustainable port, and to enhance our efforts in support of our communities. Clearly these efforts are yielding positive results, said Houston. The VPA directly employs 165 staff. Port activities generate approximately 70,000 jobs across Canada representing approximately $3 billion in wages. The Port of Vancouver is the largest port in Canada trading $43 billion in goods with more than 90 trading economies annually. -30- For more information, please contact: Anne McMullin, Director, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Vancouver Port Authority (604) 665-9069 (office) (604) 665-9073 (fax) (778) 231-6978 (cellular) anne.mcmullin@portvancouver.com For more information: For more information on any of these stories, call 1-888 PORTVAN.
