July 13, 2005 Media Advisory: Port of Vancouver Continues to Process Rail Cargo, No Ship Diversions
For Immediate Release VANCOUVER Container terminals have notified shipping lines that over the course of the next week, they will have to start refusing truck-bound local cargo arriving on container ships. Terminals are doing this in order to ensure that there is sufficient room on the dock to process cargo destined for rail, which represents 67 per cent of import containers. Media are advised that no ships destined for the Port of Vancouver have been diverted to date as a result of the dispute with container truck drivers. As container terminals are unable to receive local truck-bound cargo, some of this cargo may be diverted to other ports of call. Container ships carry cargo destined for both road and rail and usually stop at several ports on the west coast, not just Vancouver.
