July 9, 2002 VPA approves Lafarge application in principle
Vancouver: The Vancouver Port Authority (VPA) announced today it has approved in principle the application by Lafarge Canada Inc. to build a ready-mix concrete plant on the former Sterling Shipyard site on the south shore of Burrard Inlet. Final approval would be in the form of a Project Permit and is pending the outcome of a court case regarding the jurisdiction of the property. It is also subject to 16 other conditions, resulting from the extensive input from the VPAs environmental and public process, which must be satisfied before this project can proceed.
"Throughout this process we have remained committed to hearing the views of all parties concerned and providing as much information as possible. We have now reached the end of this process and are announcing our decision," said Captain Gordon Houston, President and Chief Executive Officer, Vancouver Port Authority. "The goal of this Port remains focused on preserving port lands for the development of port and marine uses. In formulating this decision, we have taken into consideration the recommendations provided by the Burrard Environmental Review Committee (BERC), the City of Vancouver, extensive input from the public and our own internal review process." The full list of 17 conditions can be found on the VPAs website at www.portvancouver.com. The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest and most diversified port, trading more than $29 billion in goods with more than 90 nations. Port activities generate 62,000 jobs in total with $1.6 billion in Gross Domestic Product and $3.5 billion in economic output.
