Record container shipments year to date May
Vancouver: The Port of Vancouver experienced record shipments of containers during the first five months of the year, reaching a total 522,840 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), a 15 per cent increase over the same period last year. April saw the highest number of containers ever shipped in a single month with 117,216 TEUs shipped, a new record for the Port of Vancouver.

The Port of Vancouver has three container terminals: Centerm, Vanterm and Deltaport. Typical containerized imports include furniture, auto parts, appliances, electronics and clothing. Containerized exports include refrigerated cargo and value-added goods such as pork, beef, forest products and specialty grains.

As with all cargo shipments, container traffic is a critical element in the economic generation of the wealth of Canada. Each container that passes through the Port generates $450 in wages, $550 in Gross Domestic Product and $1,200 in economic output.

The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest and most diversified port, trading more than $29 billion in goods with more than 90 nations. Port activities generate 62,000 jobs in total with $1.6 billion in Gross Domestic Product and $3.5 billion in economic output. Last year, 72.9 million tonnes were shipped through the Port of Vancouver.
