Port Vancouver officially launches new harbour patrol vessel, the
Vancouver: The Vancouver Port Authority (VPA) officially introduced a new harbour patrol vessel, the Takaya, at a naming ceremony today. The new boat, the VPAs first in 10 years, derives its name from a Coast Salish term meaning teamwork.

Designed by Vancouver-based naval architecture firm, Robert Allan Ltd., and built by Allied Shipyards in North Vancouver, the Takaya is the newest of four VPA vessels. The Takaya allows the VPA Harbour Master Department to work in conjunction with outside agencies to oversee marine traffic and safety and help protect the marine environment through the inspection of the ballast water of ships. In 2000, the Harbour Master Department recorded more than 2,400 ballast water inspections to prevent the introduction of non-indigenous species into local water. Port Vancouver is a North American leader in the area of ballast water.

This new vessel is strong evidence of our commitment to the environment, and to our reputation for safety in the Port of Vancouver, said David Stowe, Chairman, Vancouver Port Authority.

"The Takaya is an excellent example of teamwork between the operational staff of the VPA and the designer and builder, to deliver a vessel that will meet the needs of the port and its customers for the next decade," said Norman Stark, President & CEO, Vancouver Port Authority.

The new 15m (50 ft.) aluminum vessel can reach a top speed of 21 knots and is built for a combination of speed and maneuverability. Advanced electronic and communications features include radar, depth sounding equipment and a global positioning system.

Vancouver is Canada's largest and most diversified port, trading more than $30 billion in goods with more than 90 nations. The Port generates 10,800 direct employment opportunities and $540 million in taxes.
