Educational Resources

Learning about the Port in our community is an important part of elementary education. From the community around us to our greater Canadian community, it's important to understand where cargo comes from and where it is going to. Our early education programming focuses on the community of the Port, the community of British Columbia and the Canadian community. We learn about each of our commodities and what province they've come from as well as how they get to the Port. From coal in Alberta to grain in the prarie provinces and woodchips in British Columbia, we take students on a journey accross Canada by truck and rail that all ends up at the Port of Vancouver. We also learn about our imported cargo from clothing to machienery and electronics. What countries these commodities come from and how importing and exporting constitute trade.

For Intermediate classes we focus on the environment of the Port. Students get to see the many species of sea life that live in the Burrard Inlet, and gather a greater understanding of what the Port does to ensure that we maintain a healthy eco-system. Importing and exporting are key lessons that are revisited in this presentation, but the importance of the environment around us is the main focus. Students get to explore images of the Port in their backyard as well as do hands on case studies and excercises that teach them about our dynamic environment.
