A major component of the Port’s community outreach is our educational programming. Learning about the Port in our community is an important part of any education. The Port provides a number or educational resources for our bordering municipalities, including Port in a Box portable classroom kits and free presentations. Bring your group for a field trip to our Interpretive Centre at Canada Place or we can come out to you and provide a presentation right in your classroom. Our presentations are interactive, dynamic and are catered specifically for each and every group that we work with, from a grade 3 level and up. Our early education programming focuses on the community of the Port, the community of British Columbia and the Canadian community. We learn about each of our commodities and what province they've come from as well as how they get to the Port. From coal in Alberta to grain in the prairie provinces and woodchips in British Columbia, we take students on a journey across Canada by truck and rail that all ends up at the Port of Vancouver. We also learn about our imported cargo from clothing to machinery and electronics: what countries these commodities come from and how importing and exporting together constitute trade. For Intermediate classes we focus on the environment of the Port. Students get to see the many species of sea life that live in the Burrard Inlet, and gather a greater understanding of what the Port does to ensure that we maintain a healthy eco-system. Importing and exporting are key lessons that are also visited in this presentation. All of our presentations include a video and a game at the end to highlight all of the main points addressed. |
